SHILLONG, Dec 10: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Wednesday said that the MDA government is committed to taking all necessary steps to respect, safeguard, and promote Meghalaya’s traditions and heritage.
Addressing a gathering after inaugurating newly developed cultural and tourism amenities for the renowned Nongkrem Dance at Lum Pomblang and Madan Syiem, Smit, the chief minister said that Meghalaya had not invested sufficiently in protecting its cultural identity despite more than five decades of statehood.
Reiterating the government’s emphasis on equity and inclusivity, Sangma urged people to rise above regional divides.
Maintaining that Meghalaya’s progress depends on collective effort and unity, he stressed that inclusive growth was essential for long-term development.
Sangma also pointed out that cultural events and community festivals play an important role in showcasing Meghalaya’s diversity, strengthening the rural economy and creating broader tourism avenues. According to him, the government would continue supporting initiatives across sectors, including sports, healthcare and community-led development.
Meanwhile, the chief minister conveyed satisfaction over the completion of the project, while noting that the development extended not only to the sacred dance grounds but also to Madan Syiem and the adjoining cultural precincts.
He stated that the upgraded facilities would contribute significantly to preserving one of the state’s most important cultural expressions.
On the other hand, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, who also attended the event, said the project reflected the government’s intention to ensure holistic development across all communities.
He added that plans were in place to beautify the historic Iewduh market to make it safer and more convenient for visitors and traders.
Meanwhile, the Sordar of Smit, P. Nongbri, outlined several community requirements, including the need for a football stadium, improvements to the Smit Primary Health Centre and strengthening Smit College to enhance higher education opportunities for students in rural areas.
