SHILLONG, Dec 11: The East Khasi Hills district administration has moved swiftly to contain tensions at the disputed Presbyterian Church site in Ksehpyndeng, Mawryngkneng, imposing a ban on gatherings after an escalating conflict between two rival factions raised fears of unrest.
District Magistrate R.M. Kurbah issued the order under Section 163 of the BNSS, citing plans by one faction of the Presbyterian Church to re-baptise elderly residents of the locality on December 12, 2025—a move firmly opposed by the other group. The re-baptism decision, long contentious, appeared poised to reignite friction within the church community.
Kurbah stated in the order that “the move to re-baptise the residents may escalate tensions and result in a serious breach of law and order. To prevent the situation from spiralling, the district administration has prohibited any gathering at the church premises.”
She further warned that any violation of the directive would be dealt with strictly and prosecuted under Section 223 of the BNS.
The order is aimed at maintaining peace in Ksehpyndeng as the dispute remains unresolved, with authorities keeping a close watch on the situation.
