Young champions shine at State School Chess Championship

Shillong, Dec 12: The Meghalaya State School Chess Championship 2025, organised by the Meghalaya Chess Association (MCA) and sponsored by the Directorate of Sports & Youth Affairs, Government of Meghalaya, concluded on Wednesday at the Gymnasium-cum-Indoor Sports Hall, Polo.
The two-day event, held on December 9 and 10, saw an impressive turnout, with 223 young players from various affiliated districts participating.The championship was conducted under the FIDE Swiss System across six rounds. FA Amar Bhandari served as chief arbiter, assisted by FA Sumar Selon K. Khonglah as deputy chief arbiter. The opening ceremony was inaugurated by Swapnil Tembe, IAS, secretary of finance, in the presence of MCA president K. M. Warhi, general secretary K. Pajat, and other association members.
Peacyworld B. Marak of St. Mary’s H/S School won the Under-11 (Open) category, followed by Sanlanghame S. Pyrtuh of St. Edmund’s School in second place, John Vianny Tympuin of St. Anthony’s H/S School in third, and Joseph Jared Paswet of Meghalaya Police Public School in fourth. In the Under-13 boys’ section, Sagnik Kandar of KV NEHU Shillong secured first place, while Jeveswar B. Marak of St. Anthony’s H/S School, Satwik Kandar of KV NEHU Shillong, and Damanbha Mawlong of St. Paul’s, Marbisu, finished second, third and fourth respectively.
In the Under-13 girls’ category, Badashembha Tangsang of Chrished Buds School claimed the top spot, with Sabetnaki Lyngdoh of Seng Khasi Sec. School, Mawphlang, taking second, Cheaha Nikgame G. Momin of Woodland Sec. School, Dalu, finishing third, and Evelyne Kurbah of Springtime Sec. School, Sadew, placing fourth.
Among the Under-17 boys, Radharanjan Chakravarty of St. Anthony’s H/S School emerged champion, followed by Mayukh Sah of Captain William School in second, Devraj Dutta of KV EAC Upper Shillong in third, and Yochwa Gilbert Gashnga of St. Peter’s School in fourth. In the Under-17 girls’ section, the title went to Amaziah Gapesa Ch. Marak of Casarina Public School, while Rishta G. Momin of St. Paul H/S School, Marbisu, finished second, Katie Laetitia P. Kurbah of Pine Mount School took third, and Marlir Lapang of St. Peter’s Sec. School, Nongsder, secured fourth place.
The MCA extended its appreciation to all participants, officials and schools for their support in making the state-level championship a resounding success.
