SHILLONG, Dec 18: In an alarming security lapse along the Indo-Bangladesh border, alleged miscreants from Bangladesh reportedly crossed into Indian territory and robbed residents of Umniuh Tmar village in the Pynursla area on Thursday.
The assailants stole three mobile phones, a pair of earphones, and a tablet from the victims. The incident took place in a fenced and BSF-guarded border zone, approximately one kilometre inside Indian territory, raising questions about surveillance effectiveness.
According to police, around four miscreants blocked the road with tree branches and stones, forcing a vehicle carrying five occupants—one male driver and four women passengers—to stop. The armed suspects then emerged and looted the victims, who did not resist out of fear.
Pynursla police responded promptly after being informed, confirming the robbery and initiating an investigation.
Four Bangladeshis arrested in WJH
In another development, police arrested four Bangladeshi nationals for unlawfully entering India via the Dawki sector in West Jaintia Hills district on the intervening night of December 17-18.
During a routine naka checking at Amlarem market junction around 12:30 am, police personnel flagged down a speeding tourist vehicle (ML04 D 9309) approaching from Dawki. The vehicle attempted to flee, triggering a chase that ended with its interception at Amsarin.
Verification revealed four undocumented Bangladeshi nationals inside, en route to Assam.
The vehicle was seized while the driver, Chemphang Rasmut (43) from Shkentalang village, was arrested.
A case has been registered under the Foreigners Act and relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The accused have been produced in court.
