Curtain comes down on two-day Simsang Festival

WILLIAMNAGAR, Dec 20: Cabinet minister Marcuise N Marak has informed that Meghalaya is expected to receive one lakh tourists by 2028 owing to the rapid growth currently being witnessed in the state’s tourism sector.
He made this observation while addressing a gathering at the two-day Simsang Festival, which concluded with pomp and gaiety at the WDSA playground in Williamnagar on Saturday.
Marak, who had inaugurated the event on Friday, highlighted the importance of organising such festivals. He said that such festivals are instrumental in helping artists, singers and entrepreneurs across the state.
The programme was also attended by the Co-chairman of the Meghalaya State Planning Board, Nihim D Shira, Deputy Commissioner RP Marak and Superintendent of Police Stephen Rynjah, among other district officials.
The festival, which drew thousands of residents from different parts of East Garo Hills, featured a variety of cultural highlights. These included singing and dancing competitions, performances by local bands and a cooking competition.
Traditional culture was well-represented with folk songs, the Wangala dance and indigenous games such as An.ding Oka and Wa.pong Sika.
