SHILLONG, Dec 23: Record traffic congestion in Shillong this festive season is frustrating for many residents, but the traffic chaos has created a lucrative business boom for the city’s bike taxis.
With the onset of festivities bringing large crowds onto the roads, bike taxi riders are reporting a significant increase in passengers and earnings. “People are leaving their cars because of the jam and riding with us to beat the traffic during this season,” one rider noted. Another stated he is earning between ₹1,500 and ₹2,000 on a single day, as customers prioritize avoiding delays to reach their destinations quickly.
Heavy traffic affects major parts of Shillong, with particularly congested stretches including Upper Shillong–Rilbong, Rilbong–Rhino Point, and IGP–Motphran.
The Shillong Traffic Police (STP) has announced traffic measures to manage the flow and ensure safety during the festive rush. Due to anticipated congestion near markets, event venues, and places of worship, the STP encourages citizens to use public transport, avoid peak hours, and utilize only designated parking areas.
Furthermore, the STP warned motorists against drunken driving, over-speeding, and failure to wear seatbelts or helmets. Vigorous checking for Motor Vehicles Act violations is planned, and drivers are directed to strictly adhere to all traffic rules.
