GAZA CITY, Dec 23: Gaza’s tiny Palestinian Christian community is trying to preserve the spirit of Christmas amid destruction, grief, and a fragile ceasefire after more than a year of war.
At the Holy Family Church compound in Gaza City, displaced Christians gathered to sing hymns and exchange modest gifts, finding brief comfort despite the devastation around them. For 76-year-old Attallah Tarazi, faith has been a lifeline after losing close family members and spending more than two years sheltering at the church.
Although the ceasefire has reduced Israeli strikes since October, many Christians say the pain of war remains overwhelming. Traditional celebrations have been scaled back, with some limiting observances to prayers and religious rituals. Shadi Abo Dowd, whose mother was killed in a July strike on the same church compound, said there is “no feast,” only mourning, as families continue to cope with loss and uncertainty.
Church leaders have offered support, including a visit by the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, who described Christmas in Gaza as unfolding amid “dark and challenging times.” Still, residents say they feel trapped in a state of “no peace and no war,” fearing the truce may not hold.
The conflict began after Hamas-led attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023, followed by an Israeli offensive that has killed tens of thousands of Palestinians and displaced most of Gaza’s population. Winter rains have further worsened living conditions for those in shelters and tents.
With many Christians having fled Gaza, younger community members say Christmas feels incomplete, raising concerns about the future of Christianity in the territory. Despite ongoing trauma, families are creating small moments of joy for children, holding onto faith, hope, and a determination to endure. (AP)
