SHILLONG, Dec 24: The National People’s Youth Front (NPYF) on Wednesday expressed strong concern over reports that women wearing Santa hats were allegedly harassed in public spaces in Delhi by members of the Bajrang Dal. The group described the incident as a serious violation of constitutional rights.
In a statement, NPYF national president Nickey Nongkhlaw said the women were reportedly stopped, questioned, accused of promoting religious conversion, and asked to leave the area. The organisation condemned these actions as vigilantism and an attempt to police personal choices under the guise of morality.
The NPYF noted that the reported incident carries added significance ahead of Christmas, when Christians across India prepare to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. It called the alleged actions insensitive and likely to deepen social divisions during a time traditionally associated with peace and goodwill. The statement emphasised that festive clothing or religious expression cannot be deemed provocative. Questioning citizens about their faith, attire, or beliefs has no legal basis, it argued, adding that such acts undermine India’s secular character and infringe on fundamental freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution.
The NPYF urged law enforcement authorities to take prompt and firm action against those involved, warning that inaction could normalise religious harassment in public spaces. It reiterated that governance in India must be guided by constitutional principles and the rule of law, not mob action.
The organisation affirmed its continued opposition to intolerance, religious discrimination, and any actions that compromise the dignity and safety of women. The statement was issued by Nickey Nongkhlaw, national president of the NPYF.
