SHILLONG, Dec 26: Although the state government either announced or laid the foundation for many infrastructure projects, they are far from completion as another year bids goodbye.
The four-lane road from Rilbong to Upper Shillong, which was set to be completed by December, is delayed by at least two months due to lack of coordination between the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited and the Public Health Engineering Department about the relaying of pipelines.
The foundation for the Shillong Ropeway project was laid in December 2024 but its civil work, except felling of trees in Lawsohtun, has not begun yet. The civil work is expected to begin in January next year.
In July this year, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had inaugurated the Polo Shopping complex but the state government has not been able to make the mall functional.
The construction of the new building of Meghalaya Legislative Assembly has been going on for years and the project was expected to be completed this year. Although the civil work is completed, the interior work is still going on. The new deadline to complete the building is July 2026.
The government had relocated the hawkers from Police Bazar earlier this year and beautification along the stretch was promised but no such work has been undertaken so far.
The much-talked-about electric buses are yet to be rolled out on the streets of Shillong by the government. It had sanctioned some amount for the oxygenation of the Wards Lake to turn its water crystal clear but the work has not started yet.
Also, the redevelopment of Municipal Market at Laitumkhrah, Shillong is incomplete as the new building is yet to be opened for vendors and public.
The Smart Road at Lachumiere was foreclosed and the road continues to remain abandoned.
