Upcoming Rain Museum will give fillip to tourism in Mawsynram, says local MLA

SHILLONG, Dec 26: Mawsynram MLA Ollan Sing Suin has expressed confidence that the Rain Museum project, currently under construction with an estimated budget of over Rs 25 crore, will significantly boost tourism in the Mawsynram area.
Mawsynram, often referred to as the wettest place on Earth, receives an average annual rainfall of about 12,000 mm. The museum aims to celebrate the village’s wet and drizzly climate, featuring engaging exhibits and realistic rain simulations for visitors.
Suin said the Rain Museum, once completed, will also serve as an information centre for tourists and will be a unique infrastructure project highlighting Mawsynram’s distinction as the wettest place on Earth.
“It will be like a brand name for the Mawsynram constituency. Once the Rain Museum is completed, it will give a new image to Meghalaya,” he said.
The project has been progressing smoothly without major obstacles, as Mawsynram is now firmly marked on the state’s tourism map. Beyond its heavy rainfall, tourists are also drawn to the area for its natural beauty and scenic spots.
Sanctioned with a budget of Rs 25-27 crore, the Rain Museum is expected to guide visitors and enhance their experience, being the only museum of its kind in the state. It will provide detailed information on Mawsynram’s scenic locations and serve as a hub for eco-tourism initiatives.
Currently, tourists visiting Mawsynram spend only a short time in the village and often spend more on accommodation in Shillong.
To address this, the MLA highlighted plans to establish more homestays and eco-friendly accommodation offering vegetarian and non-vegetarian options, along with well-maintained tourist facilities.
Suin expressed hope that the museum and related initiatives will increase annual tourist footfall, thereby contributing to the economic growth of the Mawsynram constituency and the state as a whole.
