City returns to work as focus shifts to 2026 devp goals
As festive decorations are taken down and the holiday glow fades, Shillong is preparing to return to its regular rhythm. With offices reopening on Monday, the transition from the 2025 year-end celebrations to the start of 2026 is beginning to take hold.
The conclusion of the long winter break marks the end of seasonal revelry, making way for a new year of professional and personal ambition. For many residents, however, the turn of the calendar brings a specific set of expectations for the city’s future.
In 2026, the people of Shillong are looking beyond the festivities toward substantial urban and policy improvements. Key among these are demands for better governance and a strategic boost to the tourism industry. There is also a clear call for enhanced public convenience and visible infrastructure upgrades.
As the first full working week begins, the focus remains on whether these aspirations for economic growth and civic development will result in concrete action. For a city emerging from its holiday break, the priority is now firmly on progress and effective administration.
Shillong shivers
Winter in Shillong has intensified, with the mild chill of previous weeks sharpening into a biting cold. Temperatures are dropping steadily, and dense morning fog now blankets the city, slowing the early pace and obscuring familiar landmarks.
Residents have responded with the annual necessity of heavy layering. Sweaters and jackets are mandatory, and the demand for hot tea and heaters has surged as households look to stave off the frost.
The sharp wind has made outdoor activity a challenge. Morning routines are being delayed, and the usual bustle of the streets has quieted as people stay indoors. Simple tasks, from chores to commutes, now require extra resolve against the elements.
Despite the drop in temperature, the city retains a stark beauty. The misty hills and crisp air provide a scenic backdrop to the season, though most locals prefer to enjoy the view from the warmth of their homes.
As the winter deepens, Shillong has settled into a slower, quieter rhythm.
