Barcelona, Jan 9: Real Madrid booked a place in the Spanish Super Cup final with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over city rivals Atletico Madrid in Jeddah, setting up a high-stakes clasico against Barcelona on Sunday.
The win came without star forward Kylian Mbappé, who continues to recover from a knee sprain.
Federico Valverde, deployed at right-back due to Madrid’s mounting injury woes, opened the scoring within two minutes, drilling a free kick past Jan Oblak. Villarreal loanee Rodrygo doubled the lead in the 55th minute after Valverde sliced through Atletico’s defence with an incisive pass, leaving the Brazilian to slot home confidently.
Alexander Sorloth struck back moments later with a powerful header from Giuliano Simeone’s cross, setting up a tense final half-hour. Atletico pushed hard for the equaliser, but Thibaut Courtois denied both Sorloth and Alex Baena with sharp stops to preserve Madrid’s lead.
Valverde admitted the early drought weighed on him. “After so many games without scoring, today was a great day to find the net again and for the team to win,” he said, stressing the need to stay focused for the final.
The match also saw Atletico captain Koke Resurrección make derby history, appearing against Madrid for the 44th time – surpassing former Real defender Sergio Ramos. But the milestone offered little consolation. “It hurts because we wanted to be in the final,” Koke said. “We had chances, but the ball wouldn’t go in.”
Madrid’s victory takes them into a rematch of last year’s final, where Barcelona thumped them 5-2 to lift the title. Barcelona secured passage with a commanding 5-0 win over Athletic Bilbao in Wednesday’s semifinal.
Mbappé Racing Against Time
Madrid manager Xabi Alonso confirmed Mbappé will travel to Saudi Arabia and may feature in Sunday’s showpiece, though he provided no guarantee the league’s top scorer will be fit.
“He’s much better, he’s been training and he’s feeling good,” Alonso said of Mbappé, who has missed two games with a left knee sprain. His return would provide a significant boost as Madrid attempt to halt their recent dip and reclaim momentum against an in-form Barcelona.
The timing could be decisive. Madrid edged Barcelona 2-1 in October’s league meeting, courtesy of Mbappé and Jude Bellingham, but since then Barcelona have surged to the La Liga summit while questions linger over Alonso’s long-term plans.
Barca’s Rising Confidence
Barcelona dismantled Athletic Bilbao without strength-testing teenager Lamine Yamal until the final stages. The competition has seen manager Hansi Flick benefit from depth and energy across midfield and attack, with Fermin López emerging as a potent wildcard. With only Gavi Paez unavailable, Flick faces a welcome selection puzzle — in sharp contrast to Madrid, who remain stretched.
Injury Clouds Over Madrid
Alongside Mbappé’s uncertainty, Madrid are without Dani Carvajal, Eder Militao and Trent Alexander-Arnold. Reports suggest Antonio Rudiger and Raul Asencio are also doubtful after the semifinal bruising, leaving Madrid short at both full-back and centre-back.
La Liga Continues in Parallel
While the Super Cup unfolds in Saudi Arabia, the remaining clubs return to domestic duties. Third-placed Villarreal host Alaves looking to close the gap on the leaders, while Espanyol could strengthen their Champions League bid with a win at Levante. The stage is now set for one of football’s fiercest rivalries to decide a trophy on foreign soil — with Europe watching and Real Madrid hoping their biggest star is ready for the spotlight. In many ways, Sunday’s clash now promises to be more than just another chapter in Spanish football’s most storied rivalry.
With Barcelona riding a wave of confidence and Real Madrid battling personnel issues but buoyed by belief, the final arrives wrapped in uncertainty, intrigue and narrative weight. A fit-again Mbappé could tilt the scales, an absent one could expose the cracks Madrid have spent weeks trying to paper over, while Barcelona appear to have rediscovered their swagger under Flick at the perfect moment.
What is certain, however, is that neither side will yield an inch in a contest that has historically demanded intensity, drama and decisive moments from its protagonists.
And whether the trophy ends up draped in white or blue-and-red ribbons, the result is poised to echo far beyond Jeddah — into the league season, the dressing rooms, and the minds of players and managers who know that victories in a clasico, particularly one with silverware at stake, can often shape the battles still to come.Sunday’s final, then, shapes up as a measuring stick for two giants whose seasons have begun on diverging paths yet remain interlocked by history and ambition.
