SHILLONG, Jan 11: Promising major reforms in the functioning of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC), Cabinet Minister and National People’s Party (NPP) MLA Timothy D Shira has expressed confidence that the party would secure a majority in the upcoming MDC elections.
Shira said that if the NPP is re-elected to form the executive committee (EC) in the GHADC, the party would introduce significant administrative and structural reforms in the district council to accelerate development in Garo Hills. He said the proposed changes would strengthen the GHADC and improve service delivery.
With the elections only a few months away, Shira said the NPP was confident in its candidates and maintained that despite voters being conscious of various issues, they would ultimately recognise that there was no viable alternative capable of forming the executive committee.
Highlighting the party’s governance record, Shira said the NPP-led government had resolved the long-pending salary crisis of GHADC employees, who had gone without salaries for 42 months.
He said that following the intervention of Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, funds were arranged for the payment of 12 months’ salary at one go, with steps initiated to ensure regular monthly disbursement in the future.
Shira said the NPP remains committed to sustaining and strengthening the GHADC while ensuring overall development in Garo Hills, including improvements in roads, infrastructure and other developmental works across the region.
