SHILLONG, Jan 14: After facing massive discontentment, the state government has officially dropped the idea of operating the upcoming Tura Medical College and Hospital on a public-private-partnership (PPP) mode.
Informing this here on Wednesday, Health and Family Welfare Minister Wailadmiki Shylla said the government has already started the recruitment process for the upcoming Tura Medical College although he admitted that getting adequate number of faculty was proving to be a challenge.
Making it clear that it will be a government medical college and will not be operated on a PPP mode, the minister said that the government took the decision following concerns raised by the people against privatisation of the proposed medical college.
He also said that infrastructure development work was progressing at a good pace and was nearing completion.
Meanwhile, the minister also informed that the Health Department has decided to create another category of health centres which will be designated as PHC+.
This comes following public demands to upgrade PHCs to CHCs. The proposed PHC+ will have more doctors, nurses and beds than regular PHCs but lesser manpower and facilities as compared to CHCs, he added.
