Govt bans use of term ‘Harijan’

SHILLONG, Jan 15: Following the National Human Rights Commission directions, the Meghalaya government has prohibited the use of the term “Harijan” in all official communications.
The state government has directed that the term be replaced with “Dalit” with immediate effect. This directive applies to all official records and references, including the names of places, villages, societies, organisations, and addresses where the term is currently in use.
