NOIDA, Jan 21: In Greater Noida, Abhay Kumar, director of MZ Wiztown Planners, was sent to judicial custody for a week in connection with the death of 27-year-old software engineer Yuvraj Mehta. Mehta’s car fell into a deep, water-filled pit near a construction site in Sector 150 on January 16.
Despite pleading for help for nearly two hours, rescue efforts by police, NDRF, and SDRF failed, while his father witnessed the tragedy.
The Uttar Pradesh government has intensified the investigation through a Special Investigation Team (SIT) comprising ADG Bhanu Bhaskar, the Meerut divisional commissioner, and the PWD chief engineer.
The SIT visited Noida Authority headquarters, questioning senior and junior officials, particularly from the traffic cell. Forensic teams collected samples and carried out detailed measurements of the accident site.
Efforts are ongoing to arrest another builder linked to the site. The pit had accumulated water since 2021, first under Lotus Greens and later under MZ Wiztown Planners.
The incident prompted public outrage, leading the government to remove the Noida Authority CEO and terminate a junior traffic engineer.
The FIR includes charges under sections for culpable homicide not amounting to murder, causing death by negligence, and acts endangering life or safety.
Officials emphasized that investigations are ongoing, with the SIT closely coordinating with forensic experts and the victim’s family to determine accountability.
The case has sparked widespread criticism of local authorities and developers, highlighting systemic negligence and the urgent need for stricter construction safety measures. (PTI)
