GUWAHATI, Jan 23: Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla on Thursday informed a joint action committee of MPs and MLAs that the case related to the death of Mayanglambam Rishikanta Singh has been handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) for an impartial probe.
Singh (29) was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Churachandpur district in Manipur on Wednesday night, security officials said.
A resident of Kakching, Singh who belonged to the Meitei community had gone to Churachandpur district to visit his Kuki-Zo wife.
Condoling the death of Singh, Governor Bhalla also informed the bereaved family members, who had accompanied the delegation that the case was being handed over to the apex investigation agency for a thorough and impartial investigation.
The delegation of the joint action committee, led by Member of Parliament, Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, along with MLAs, Thokchom Lokeshwar Singh and Kangujam Ranjit Singh, had called on the Manipur Governor on Wednesday and submitted a memorandum seeking appropriate action in connection with the incident.
The Governor further informed the delegation that intensive combing operations have been underway since Wednesday night, with coordinated efforts by state and central forces to apprehend those responsible.
The delegation along with the family members of the deceased, expressed serious concern over the incident and urged authorities to ensure a fair and thorough investigation.
Reassuring the delegation of the government’s earnest attention to the matter, Governor Bhalla said all necessary measures were being taken in accordance with the law.
