SHILLONG, Feb 3: Governor CH Vijayashankar on Tuesday met a media delegation from Karnataka at Lok Bhavan, Shillong. The delegation is on a press tour organised by the Press Information Bureau (PIB) to gain firsthand exposure to the state’s culture, heritage, and development.
The interaction held special significance as Governor Vijayashankar hails from Mysuru. Speaking in Kannada, the Governor briefed the journalists on Meghalaya’s socio-cultural landscape, specifically its matrilineal system, tribal traditions, and the coexistence of its diverse communities.
The Governor discussed Meghalaya’s potential in agriculture and tourism, with a focus on sustainable development. He pointed out the global reputation of Lakadong turmeric, known for its high curcumin content, and noted efforts to promote it as a premium organic product to boost rural incomes.
The delegation also met with members of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) to study the region’s traditional governance under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. The session was chaired by KHADC Chairman Strong Kharjana.
Council members provided an overview of the KHADC’s role in preserving Khasi customs and traditions while addressing administrative and developmental needs. The discussion covered the functioning of traditional institutions, land and resource management, and the implementation of customary laws. The members also discussed the use of information technology in governance and the Council’s efforts to balance development with indigenous rights and environmental conservation.
