SHILLONG, Feb 3: The New Shillong Township Water Supply Scheme is moving forward after clearing major land hurdles that had previously stalled the project.
PHE Minister Marcuise Marak inspected the project site at Nongkhali Village on Tuesday and confirmed that work is now in full swing. He noted that land disputes had delayed necessary road construction, but those issues have been resolved.
While overall physical progress currently stands at 30%, construction of the dam has commenced and is expected to be completed by next year. Following this, work will begin on the jackwell pump.
“Different components of the project are at various stages, and we are satisfied with the current progress,” Marak said.
Upon completion, the scheme will serve the New Shillong Township and 32 surrounding villages. Phase I of the project has received administrative approval with a budget of Rs 538.44 crore under the State Plan. The system will initially supply 33 million liters per day (MLD), with a total future capacity of 70 MLD. Raw water will be piped to a treatment plant near Bri-Heh village, Mawpdang, for processing and distribution.
A key feature of the project is the integration of a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system and Internet of Things (IoT) technology. This will allow for automated monitoring of water flow, pressure, and leak detection from a central command room to ensure faster issue resolution.
