NEW DELHI, Feb 8: A protest was held at Jantar Mantar in Delhi on Sunday demanding an impartial investigation into the death of a NEET aspirant from Patna last month, with demonstrators calling for strict action against those responsible.
The victim, a student from Jehanabad district, was found unconscious at a girls’ hostel in Patna’s Chitragupt Nagar area on January 11 and later died in a private hospital after remaining in a coma for several days.
The aspirant’s parents alleged that the Bihar Police tried to suppress the matter by denying claims of sexual assault and labeling it a suicide.
They have demanded a judicial probe headed by a sitting Supreme Court or high court judge to ensure accountability. Addressing the protest, the father appealed for justice, stating that the family has been seeking transparency and accountability since the incident.
The protest was organised by the Bihar Nirbhaya Sangharsh Samiti (Delhi-NCR) and witnessed participation from several people from Delhi and Bihar, including the victim’s family members. Demonstrators urged authorities to conduct a fair and transparent investigation and ensure that all aspects of the case are thoroughly examined.
A Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Bihar Police is currently investigating the incident, while the state government has recommended a CBI probe into the matter. Delhi-based social activist Uday Kumar Sharma, who led the protest, stressed the importance of nationwide solidarity against crimes targeting students and women. Former West Delhi MP Mahabal Mishra also supported the demand for an independent investigation under judicial supervision.
Protesters reiterated that the movement would continue until justice is delivered, mobilising support from across the country to ensure that the aspirant’s family receives accountability and that the truth of the incident is fully uncovered. (PTI)
