SHILLONG, Feb 9: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma was among 19 individuals conferred the CBCI National Awards 2026 during the 37th CBCI General Body Meeting held at St. John’s Medical College in Bengaluru on Sunday.
The awards, newly constituted by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI), were presented for the first time to Sangma and the other awardees at the national gathering.
According to a press release, the CBCI National Awards honour individuals who have rendered exceptional service to the Church, society and the nation, embodying Gospel values and contributing to human dignity, justice, education, leadership and innovation.
The awards aim to recognise lives marked by faith in action, intellectual contribution, pastoral leadership, participation in nation building and selfless service across clerical, religious and lay vocations.
Speaking on the occasion, Sangma expressed gratitude to the CBCI and stated that the award reinforces the belief that the work being undertaken holds value and makes a difference, and motivates recipients to uphold the values taught by the Church.
He acknowledged the role of the Catholic Church in shaping youth, particularly in the North Eastern region, and assured continued collaboration. Referring to challenges faced by churches in different parts of the country, he stated that efforts would be made to work together and encouraged Catholic and Christian youth to take leadership roles not only in politics but across various sectors.
Among those present at the event were KJ George, Minister for Energy, Government of Karnataka, Bishops from across India, Church leaders, invited dignitaries and representatives of civil society.
