FIR filed against BJP leader, workers for ‘assaulting’ Cong women workers during rally

GUWAHATI, Feb 11: Three women leaders of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) on Wednesday lodged an FIR at Tezpur Sadar police station against a BJP leader and workers for allegedly assaulting women Congress workers during a rally in Sonitpur district on February 7.

According to the police complaint, BJP workers armed with sticks also allegedly attempted to vandalise the vehicle in which APCC president Gaurav Gogoi was travelling during the ‘Xomoy Poribortonor’ Yatra.

When some Congress workers tried to resist the attack, BJP workers reportedly assaulted the women Congress workers and even attempted to tear off their clothes, it was alleged in the FIR.

The FIR further states that BJP workers used abusive language against the women leaders and workers and made obscene gestures. It has also been alleged that when a journalist tried to record the incident, BJP workers snatched away his camera and microphone and physically assaulted him.

Congress leaders Rupa Kalita, Trishna Bora Kakoti and Sampurna Saikia filed the FIR, naming 10 individuals along with photographic evidence.

The BJP workers named in the complaint are Indukalpa Hazarika, Amitabh Saikia, Rakesh Nath, Bappa Ghosh, Kamakhya Bora, Mohan Das, Pranjal Sut, Bintu Hussain and Basanti Devi.

Speaking to the media after filing the FIR, the Congress leaders demanded justice and called for immediate arrest of the accused persons.

APCC has also urged the Assam State Women’s Commission to take suo motu cognisance of the incident.
