Guwahati, Feb 11: The Royal School of Communication and Media (RSCOM), The Assam Royal Global University (RGU) has formally subscribed to the UNI News Service at a function held at the university campus today and RSCOM’s first issue of the biannual journal “Royal Herald” was also inaugurated.
The function was graced by Manish Goswami, Deputy Editor, The Assam Tribune as the Chief Guest; Druba Ghosh, Bureau Chief, PTI as the Guest of Honour; Prof. A. K. Buragohain, Vice Chancellor, RGU; Prof. P. J. Baruah, Distinguished Professor, RSCOM; apart from others, according to a Press release.
Welcoming the audience, Prof. P. J. Baruah said, “The introduction of the UNI News Agency Service, the first of its kind in any University of the North East is aimed at giving our students a hands-on experience on downloading the latest news in their computers –- just like in a news room in a newspaper or a Television satellite channel – edit the news – give headlines – and place it in a news page or TV News Bulletin. Our aim and objective in the long run is to make RSCOM the media learning hub of the North East Region.”
In his address, Vice Chancellor Prof AK Buragohain said, “We believe the familiarity and expertise of News Agency Service will instill in our students the confidence and expertise to face the job demands of the media industry after they pass out from our University. A Mass Comm degree from RSCOM will carry the weight of theory along with practical expertise of processing news and related work in real time.”
Addressing the gathering, Manish Goswami gave an insight into the concept of news. Starting from the times of Mahabharata when Sanjay reported King Dhritarashtra about the war of Kurukshetra, Goswami highlighted the significance of News agencies and dependence of newspapers on news agencies for a wide range of news.
In her address, Durba Ghosh said, “The launch of the News Agency Service at RGU is a landmark step.” She highlighted how the News agency journalism works, what are the learning points of the young journalists in the profession.
Royal Herald, the departmental journal is the outcome of the untiring efforts of RSCOM students along with the guidance of the faculty. It is a chronicle of the major activities of RGU and its media department during the last six months. This biannual journal will appear twice every year in January and July. This journal is aimed at giving RGU students a hands-on experience in news reporting, news editing, photography, headline writing and page making.
The function concluded with the vote of thanks offered by Dr. Florence H. Rabha, Head and Assistant Professor, RSCOM.
