SHILLONG, Feb 12: The East Jaintia Hills district administration has banned bull and animal fights with immediate effect, invoking Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).
The order, issued by District Magistrate Manish Kumar on Wednesday, follows reports of such fights being organised during fetes and festivals in several parts of the district.
According to the notification, these events violate Section 11 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, and contravene a 2014 Supreme Court judgment prohibiting bullfighting.
The ban applies to the entire district, and the administration warned that any violation will attract strict legal action. Due to the urgency of the matter, the order was passed ex-parte and will remain in force until further notice.
