SHILLONG, Feb 12: The Congress has resolved to go solo in the forthcoming Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections, deciding to field candidates in all 29 constituencies without entering into any pre-poll alliance. State party president Vincent H Pala said on Thursday that the party would fight the elections on its own strength.
He indicated that the organisation has drawn considerable interest from aspirants, with 67 applications received for party tickets. One applicant has already withdrawn and another is likely to step aside, which would bring the number of contenders under consideration to 65.
The final list of candidates, he explained, will be released only after the government formally notifies the election schedule, in keeping with the party’s standard procedure. Pala also conveyed confidence about the party’s preparedness, noting that workers are actively engaged on the ground and expressing hope that the Congress would perform well in the council polls.
