SHILLONG, Feb 14: The apparent calm in Langpih should not be mistaken for acceptance of status quo, HSPDP president and former Rambrai Jyrngam MLA KP Pangniang has cautioned, warning that the quiet in the sector reflects restraint, not satisfaction.
Pangniang, whose party is an ally in the NPP-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government, indicated that residents have deliberately held back from protests in anticipation of concrete government action on the pending boundary settlement.
He stressed that this restraint must not be misread as acceptance of the status quo.
He maintained that assurances given earlier by the Chief Ministers of Meghalaya and Assam during their 2022 visit to Langpih had raised expectations that the dispute would be resolved.
He further noted that while arrangements have been reached in the Hahim and Upper Gizang sectors of West Khasi Hills district, Langpih remains unsettled.
According to Pangniang, recent delays in advancing the settlement process have been attributed to elections in Assam, with the Meghalaya Chief Minister indicating that discussions would resume after the polls.However, he warned that if the commitments made to Langpih are not fulfilled, the sector could once again witness unrest and protests. He also cautioned that similar reactions may surface in other unresolved areas if the settlement process does not move forward as promised.
The remarks signal growing impatience within one of the remaining unsettled sectors and place pressure on the government to convert assurances into action.
