SHILLONG, Feb 27: Leader of the Opposition Mukul Sangma on Friday highlighted gaps in the regulation of over-speeding and the licensing of two-wheeler taxi services, such as Rapido.
Speaking during a discussion on the functioning of the Police Department, Sangma noted that while bike taxis have emerged to meet public demand, many operators lack proper commercial licences. He stated that despite the willingness of many youths to participate in the sector, only a limited number of commercial licences have been issued.
Sangma stressed that aggregators and individuals must be granted valid two-wheeler commercial licences as required by law. He urged police personnel to verify these licences during road checks, noting that the lack of regulation poses a risk to public safety and security.
The Opposition leader also raised the issue of pedestrian safety, calling for dedicated footpaths along highways, in market areas, and near schools. He pointed out that schoolchildren are often seen in vulnerable roadside conditions due to the lack of proper infrastructure.
Sangma concluded by calling for stronger regulatory enforcement and improved infrastructure to ensure overall road safety in the state.
