SHILLONG, Feb 27: Mowkaiaw legislator Nujorki Sungoh on Friday raised concerns over the poor condition of fire engines, logistical gaps at border outposts, and unpaid dues for vehicles hired during the 2023 elections.
Participating in a discussion on the Police department, Sungoh claimed the fire truck at one of the stations in his constituency is in such poor condition that “one could run faster” than the vehicle. He questioned whether the department intended to procure new vehicles to replace such ageing units.
The legislator also highlighted that personnel at a border outpost in his constituency lack a dedicated vehicle and are forced to hire private transport for operations. He urged the government to ensure that every police and border outpost is equipped with at least one official vehicle.
Regarding unpaid bills, Sungoh stated that several residents have yet to receive payments for vehicles hired by the police for the 2023 Assembly elections. Despite raising the matter with the authorities, he said the dues remain outstanding and called for an immediate release of funds.
On police recruitment, Sungoh supported calls for greater transparency, suggesting that marks for both written and physical tests be disclosed alongside the final results.
Additionally, he flagged the deterioration of local roads caused by heavy sand trucks plying on routes designed for lighter vehicles. He noted that villagers have submitted written complaints and urged the department to intervene to prevent further damage to infrastructure.
