Shillong, Feb 28: A new season, a fresh identity, and a familiar roar from the stands. Shillong Lajong FC are set to begin their campaign in the rebranded Indian Football League 2025–26 season with a home clash against Rajasthan United FC at the SSA Stadium, Polo Ground, on Sunday. Kick-off is slated for 6:30 PM.
The opening fixture presents an early opportunity for the Reds to stamp their authority in front of their home supporters.
Preparations have been intense in the lead-up to the match, with head coach Birendra Thapa expressing confidence in his squad and underlining the importance of making a positive start.
In a significant move this season, Lajong will field a fully all-Indian squad in the revamped league — a step that underlines the club’s commitment to nurturing domestic talent.
The team blends seasoned campaigners with promising youngsters, all eager to prove their mettle and represent the region with pride.
Rajasthan United, meanwhile, will be equally determined to open their account with a strong performance, setting the stage for what promises to be a competitive encounter.
Tickets are available across multiple categories, ranging from Rs 100 to Rs 500, and can be purchased at the SSA Stadium ticket counter prior to kick-off.
The match will be telecast live on Doordarshan and streamed on the Waves OTT platform.
As the rebranded Indian Football League ushers in a new era, the focus will firmly be on consistency, competitiveness and the growth of homegrown talent.
For clubs like Shillong Lajong FC, the league offers more than just a platform to compete — it is an opportunity to strengthen grassroots development, build stronger regional identities and raise the overall standard of Indian domestic football.
If the opening fixtures are any indication, the season promises intensity, ambition and a renewed push to elevate the game across the country.
