NEW DELHI, March 2: The Kangleipak Communist Party (People’s War Group) has claimed that former Manipur MLA Md Fajur Rahim is involved in a drug trafficking racket.
The Military Council of the KCP (PWG), which has been banned under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, in a statement claimed that Rahim had transported banned substance to Bangladesh in an ambulance flagged off by the Congress in Manipur and which travelled through Manipur, Assam and Meghalaya.
The insurgent group further alleged that Rahim is running his drug trade using his political influence, adding that one of his close associates is Hefaj Uddin.
Hefaj Uddin was arrested on July 22, 2023 in connection with the seizure of drugs, reportedly valued at Rs 5 crore, from a Maruti Swift Dzire bearing the registration number AS02 CP0942. A case registered under the NDPS Act is said to be currently under trial before the court of Additional District and Sessions Judge, Karbi Anglong.
The KCP (PWG) said that a separate case, involving the seizure of heroin, weighing 207 grams and worth approximately Rs 14 crore, along with 50,000 YABA tablets weighing about 4.8 kgs, was also filed. The contraband was reportedly intercepted by Guwahati Police from an ambulance bearing the registration number MN03 C 0037.
According to the outfit, the arrested individual in that case was identified as Mirajaul Islam, also known as Mirajaul Ali, from Rajabala in Meghalaya. The drugs, destined for Bangladesh, were reportedly being transported from Manipur through Meghalaya and Assam.
The statement further claimed that the ambulance in question was flagged off on May 21, 2021, during a programme held at the Congress office in Imphal to mark the 30th death anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. It was stated that the event was attended by Congress leaders, including K. Meghachandra Singh and former Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh. The ambulance was dedicated for COVID-19 related services for the people of Wabagai constituency that the former MLA represented.
Stating that drug trafficking has severely affected youths, the KCP (PWG) warned that it will take action against individuals involved in such activities, local media reports stated. The rebel group called upon the public to remain vigilant and collectively oppose drug-related crimes in the region.
The KCP is a Maoist separatist group in Manipur. The KCP-PWG is part of the Coordination Committee, an umbrella body of top valley-based militant groups in Manipur.
