SHILLONG, March 2: The Meghalaya High Court on Monday directed the state government and other concerned authorities to submit detailed status reports on the measures taken to curb drug abuse and strengthen rehabilitation mechanisms for addicts.
The direction was issued during the hearing of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by Mewaker Lyngdoh.
The Division Bench comprising of Chief Justice Revati Mohite Dere and Justice Wanlura Diengdoh asked all respondents to place reports before the court on the implementation of steps aimed at addressing the growing drug menace.
During the hearing, Additional Advocate General Khalid Khan informed the court that, in compliance with an earlier order dated December 10, 2025, the Chief Secretary had constituted a Monitoring Committee on December 16, 2025.
He further stated that the committee held its first meeting on December 19, 2025, and is expected to recommend appropriate measures within three weeks to initiate structured action to prevent drug addiction among children and address substance abuse in the state.
Deputy Solicitor General of India, Nitesh Mozika submitted an affidavit on behalf of the Border Security Force (BSF), which was acknowledged by counsel for the petitioner.
At this stage, the petitioner’s senior counsel sought permission to implead the Customs authorities, the BSF, and the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) as additional respondents. The court allowed the request and directed that necessary amendments be carried out.
Mozika waived formal notice on behalf of the newly added respondents and sought time to obtain instructions from the concerned authorities.
The matter will be heard again on April 7.
