SHILLONG, March 4: Two persons from Assam drowned while swimming at a waterfall while picnicking at the Gunpati picnic spot, in the Assam-Meghalaya border on Tuesday.
The deceased have been identified as Joy Rani Wary (33) and Bivar Boro (33), both were residents of Kharghuli, Guwahati.
It was reported that the duo had visited the picnic spot along with three other friends.
According to police, the incident occurred at around 4 p.m. when the two went for a swim near one of the waterfalls at the site.
Their friends allegedly tried to stop them, stating that neither of them knew how to swim.
However, the two proceeded into the water and were subsequently swept away and drowned.
Though their friends attempted to rescue them, the efforts proved unsuccessful.
With the assistance of the villagers, one of the bodies was retrieved from the water; however, the other body was later recovered with the help of personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).
