SHILLONG, March 7: Bansara Eye Care Centre has declared 20 villages across Meghalaya as “Avoidable Blindness Free,” following a decade-long partnership with Operation Eyesight Universal (OEU) India.
The designated villages include 10 in Ri-Bhoi, five in Eastern West Khasi Hills, and five in South West Khasi Hills. The initiative, which began in 2014, involved door-to-door surveys, comprehensive eye screening camps, and sustained follow-up care. The project was supported by village headmen, ASHA workers, and Anganwadi workers to ensure health coverage reached rural areas.
During a declaration event on Saturday, village representatives and health workers highlighted the impact of the programme on preventing vision loss and restoring sight.
A representative of the centre stated that community collaboration and timely intervention were essential to the project’s success, adding that the programme aims to include more villages in the near future.
Bansara Eye Care Centre confirmed it will continue expanding its outreach and screening programmes to ensure wider access to regular eye check-ups across the state.
