SHILLONG, March 11: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Meghalaya unit, has expressed concern over the postponement of the elections to the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) and stated that the decision raises serious questions about governance, preparedness and the protection of democratic rights in the state.
Reacting to the development, BJP Meghalaya general secretary Wankitbok Pohshna said while the security and safety of citizens remain paramount, the indefinite deferment of the polls is a matter of concern. He said the people of Meghalaya deserve both peace and the assurance that democratic processes will not be derailed by unrest.
Pohshna further stated that the BJP Meghalaya stands firmly with the residents of Garo Hills in demanding stability, accountability and a clear roadmap for the conduct of free and fair elections at the earliest possible time.
He also emphasised that the party remains committed to constitutional values and community harmony, urging all stakeholders to work collectively to safeguard peace in the region.
The BJP leader added that it is important to ensure that the democratic voice of the people of Garo Hills is heard without delay while maintaining law and order in the region.
