Woman falls from scooty, crushed to death by truck in city

SHILLONG, March 11: A 30-year-old woman died in a tragic road accident after the scooty she was riding pillion on skidded while overtaking a truck at Nongthymmai near Eriben Presbyterian Secondary School on Tuesday night.
The deceased has been identified as Sengsil D Sangma (30), a resident of Lawmali, Shillong. She was travelling as a pillion rider on a scooty (ML05 Z 3470) driven by her husband, Nickston D Shira.
According to police, the truck, which was loaded with cement, was being driven by Daresto Thubru (33) of Mynsngat village, West Jaintia Hills, and was proceeding in the same direction.
As per the statement of the scooterist, the vehicle skidded while overtaking and both riders fell onto the road. Sengsil D Sangma was crushed under the middle tyre of the truck, leading to her death on the spot.
The scooty rider sustained injuries and was taken for medical treatment. He was later discharged after receiving first aid.
Following the incident, police carried out the necessary legal formalities and shifted the body to NEIGRIHMS Hospital, Shillong, for post-mortem examination.
