Tura, March 14: Social activist, Greneth Sangma has filed a police complaint against former MLA of Phulbari, SG Esmatur Mominin at the Baghmara PS for his alleged role in delivering inflammatory and provocative statements which he stated contributed to serious communal tension and violence between members of two communities.

The FIR follows the complaint filed earlier by leader of the opposition , Mukul Sangma over similar accusations against Mominin.

The Garo Hills region has seen unprecedented scenes of violence, loot and arson cases since Mar 9, five days ago following Mominin being manhandled while attempting to file his nomination for the now postponed GHADC election.

In the FIR filed by Sangma, he asserted that following the incident, the former MLA returned to the plains belt where he addressed a public gathering.

“He made statements portraying the events in Tura in a manner that carried strong communal undertones. These statements were reportedly capable of provoking hostility and mistrust between members of two communities. The speech is understood to have been widely circulated and discussed in the region, thereby aggravating an already sensitive situation,” alleged Greneth.

“These disturbances reportedly resulted in the loss of lives, damage to commercial establishments through acts of arson and vandalism and a serious disruption of public order. The gravity of the situation compelled the district administration to impose curfew and deploy security forces in order to restore normalcy,” he added in the FIR.

The activist, through his FIR, sought a thorough investigation into the case and for taking appropriate legal action under various sections of the law.
