Tura, March 14: The Garo Hills District Basketball Association (G-Hills DBA) secured the Runners-Up position at the 2nd State Junior U-18 Inter-District Basketball Championship 2026, held at Raid Laban College, Shillong, from March 9 to March 13, 2026.
The championship was organised by the East Khasi Hills District Basketball Association in collaboration with the Meghalaya Basketball Association, bringing together talented young basketball players from various districts across the state.
Throughout the tournament, the G-Hills team displayed impressive performance, teamwork, and determination, successfully advancing to the final round and finishing as runners-up in the prestigious state-level championship.
Speaking to the media, Cheama Cheran Momin, Assistant Coach of the U-18 Boys’ team of the G-Hills Basketball Association, said that the youth and teenage athletes of Garo Hills possess immense talent and the potential to compete at various levels. However, she emphasised that they require proper direction, guidance, and improved facilities such as coaching camps and well-developed basketball courts to further enhance their skills.
She also mentioned that this year only the boys’ team was able to participate in the championship, as the girls’ team could not take part due to a lack of adequate financial support and assistance from various stakeholders.
Momin further urged stakeholders and members of civil society to come together and provide the necessary support, facilities, and opportunities for the development of young athletes in the region.
The achievement highlights the growing strength and potential of young basketball players from Garo Hills and reflects the dedication of the players, coaches, and the district basketball association in promoting the sport in the region.
The championship also served as an important platform for young athletes to showcase their skills, promote sportsmanship, and strengthen inter-district sporting ties across Meghalaya.
