SHILLONG, March 13: While most localities in and around Shillong continue to oppose scientific waste plants, Amlarem has shown keen interest in constructing a mini waste management facility.
Cabinet Minister and local MLA Lahkmen Rymbui said on Friday that scientific waste processing is essential to protect the state’s scenic landscapes and environment from long-term pollution.
An area of approximately 4-5 acres, located away from residential habitations, has been identified for the eco-friendly project. The Minister recently inspected the site alongside members of the Dorbar Shnong and government officials.
Rymbui stated that the plan is to construct a 5 MT scientific waste plant. If successful, the model could be replicated across Meghalaya to address the state’s growing waste management needs. He expressed optimism that the project would not face opposition, as it is designed to cater to both Amlarem and its surrounding areas.
The state government has struggled for years to establish a modern scientific waste management plant for Shillong, with various localities blocking the move due to fears of health hazards. Amlarem’s initiative marks a significant shift in local participation toward environmental solutions.
