NEW DELHI, March 18: Two Khasi-Pnar girls from Meghalaya were rescued from a suspected human trafficking racket in Delhi–Haryana through a joint operation by the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) Delhi Unit and the Special Police Unit for North East Region (SPUNER).
The victims, aged 15 and 18, hail from East Jaintia Hills district. They were allegedly lured to Delhi by an acquaintance from Meghalaya on the pretext of providing jobs as domestic helpers, without the knowledge of their parents.
Sources said that upon reaching Delhi, the girls were taken to a spa in Haryana, where they were forced into exploitation. The victims later managed to contact their families, who alerted the KSU Delhi Unit.
Acting on the information, the KSU coordinated with SPUNER, leading to a rescue operation in Haryana. The two girls were successfully traced and rescued.
KSU Delhi Unit president Marbiang Khongwir said the incident highlights the growing risk faced by youths looking for jobs outside the state and urged parents and youngsters to be cautious of fraudulent job offers. The Union expressed gratitude to SPUNER officials, Meghalaya House authorities, and members of the rescue team for their swift action.
Officials said arrangements are being made for counseling and safe repatriation of the victims to their families in Meghalaya.
The KSU also acknowledged the support of Khliehriat MLA, Kyrmen Shylla who sponsored the girl’s travel arrangement to allow them to return home safely.
