GUWAHATI, March 20: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday filed his nomination from Jalukbari Assembly constituency, a seat which he has held since 2001.
Leading a massive roadshow from the Veterinary Field in Khanapara to the Kamrup Metro DC’s Office at Hengrabari, covering around 5.6 km, Sarma, who was accompanied by his wife and son, submitted his papers before the returning officer at the DC’s office.
Later, while speaking to mediapersons at the DC’s office, Sarma recalled his political journey from an initial defeat in 1996 to five consecutive wins in the subsequent elections, establishing Jalukbari as a stronghold.
Expressing optimism to regain support from the electorate of the constituency, post delimitation, the chief minister however declined to comment on the number of seats that the NDA would secure in the elections. “The poll outcome can only be predicted on April 9. As of now, we want the elections to pass off smoothly,” he said.
He further said that several senior leaders from the alliance would file their nominations in the subsequent days.
The chief minister further sought the blessings for the NDA candidates from the people of Assam.
The Assam Assembly elections on April 9 will primarily witness a straight contest between the incumbent BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government and the six-party Congress-led Opposition alliance across 126 Assembly seats.
