Mawsynram MLA urges reopening of border haats as B’desh stabilises
SHILLONG, March 24: Mawsynram MLA Ollan Singh Suin has called for the reopening of two border haats with Bangladesh, citing the return of stability in the neighbouring country. Speaking to reporters, Suin noted that the two trade hubs in his constituency have remained closed for over a year due to political turmoil in Bangladesh and concerns over infiltration. “Since the new government has been installed in Bangladesh and normalcy has returned, we are optimistic that the border haats will reopen shortly,” he said. Addressing security concerns, the MLA stated that while rare cases of infiltration have been reported in his constituency, those involved were either arrested or pushed back. He maintained that there is no immediate cause for alarm as the Border Security Force (BSF) remains vigilant, supported by the cooperation of local stakeholders. However, Suin highlighted that certain stretches of the border, particularly along rivers and streams, remain unfenced. He stressed the need for authorities to address these gaps to ensure the border is fully secured.
Action sought as wild elephants herd runs amok in Mawsynram
SHILLONG, March 24: Residents of Mawsynram are facing a growing threat from a herd of wild elephants that has been damaging crops and property in the area for the past year. Local MLA Ollan Singh Suin confirmed that a group of five elephants has been roaming the constituency, destroying plantations and several dwelling houses. Suin stated that he has taken up the matter with the concerned department to have the herd driven out. He added that the presence of the elephants has created fear among locals, many of whom are now hesitant to venture out for sowing activities. According to the MLA, the elephants likely migrated from the Balpakram and Ranikor regions. While the herd has occasionally left the area, they continue to return. No human casualties or injuries have been reported so far.
EJH village headmen protest against high power bills
JOWAI, March 24: The Synjuk Waheh Shnong (Federation of Village Headmen) of East Jaintia Hills has expressed concern over a sudden hike in electricity bills issued by the MePDCL Khliehriat Distribution Division. The federation stated that residents across the district are struggling to pay their bills, which increased significantly without prior notice or explanation regarding the calculation method. It has demanded a public clarification on the billing system and requested a review of unusually high charges to ensure transparency. Regarding the proposed installation of smart meters, a meeting held on March 21 resolved that the project cannot be accepted until comprehensive public awareness programmes are conducted. The headmen noted that the public remains largely uninformed about how these devices function and called for discussions to address community concerns. The Synjuk’s general secretary, Leningstar Rymbai, urged the authorities to take immediate action and foster better cooperation to benefit the citizens.
