SHILLONG, March 24: The ruling NPP has made it clear that it will field a candidate in the Shillong Parliamentary By-elections which has been necessitated following the demise of former MP Ricky A.J. Syngkon last month.
NPP state president Prestone Tynsong on Tuesday declined to comment on who will contest the polls from the party.
Asked if the party will go for an alliance with the BJP and field a common candidate, Tynsong said a final decision would be taken by the party only after detailed discussions.
It may be recalled that the BJP had extended its support to NPP candidate Ampareen Lyngdoh in the Lok Sabha elections in 2024. However, the move backfired as the NPP comprehensively lost the election in both Shillong and Tura seat where it had fielded Agatha K. Sangma.
While Syngkon won the Shillong seat, Congress candidate Saleng A. Sangma was victorious in the Tura seat.
