Thousands visit Greece’s blooming peach orchards

VERIA, March 24: Each spring, the plains of Greece’s largest peach-producing region around Veria transform into a vast pink landscape as peach trees bloom, attracting thousands of visitors from across Greece and increasingly from other European countries.
The phenomenon covers approximately 170 square kilometers (65 square miles) and has become a celebrated seasonal attraction. Gianna Pilitsidou, president of the Veria Tourism Club, emphasizes that the spectacle is a must-see, offering a unique opportunity to witness nature’s beauty across such an extensive area.
In recent years, the Veria Tourism Club has organized events in the blooming orchards to celebrate the season, including photography activities, cycling tours, and exhibitions promoting local farmers’ products. These events are designed not only to welcome spring but also to support the local agricultural community. Over two weekends, thousands of visitors wandered through the orchards, enjoying the vibrant scenery and engaging in the planned activities.
International visitors like Dutch blogger Wesley van Eijk have highlighted the region as a hidden gem beyond Greece’s more well-known destinations. Travelers are increasingly discovering Veria’s peach blossoms, enhancing the town’s visibility in Europe and supporting the local economy. Anastasios Chalkidis, president of the local farmers union, praised the hard work of farmers whose efforts make the seasonal spectacle possible, noting that the events also serve as an important promotion of the region’s peach production.
Tourism benefits are tangible, with local hotels reporting a rise in bookings during the bloom, and visitors expressing awe at the beauty of the fields. Andrea Lachnit, a German tourist, described the experience as “stunning, beautiful, and heavenly,” noting it was unlike anything she had ever seen. The Veria peach trees typically blossom from mid-March to mid-April, creating a short but striking window for visitors to experience the region’s natural and cultural charm.
The combination of natural beauty, cultural celebration, and local engagement has made the peach blossom season a signature event for Veria, attracting attention from travelers, bloggers, and media while highlighting the importance of agriculture and tourism in sustaining the local economy. This annual spectacle has grown into both a visual marvel and a community-centered celebration of spring in northern Greece. (AP)
