BJP, TMC supporters clash in Bengal, cop attacked

KOLKATA, March 26: Clashes broke out between BJP and TMC supporters during an election campaign by a saffron party candidate in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district, with several police personnel also coming under attack while trying to control the situation.Eight people were detained in connection with the incident as raids were continuing in the area, an official said.While both sides accused each other of being responsible for the clash, Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Agarwal sought a report about it from the police.A sub-inspector-ranked police officer and three-four political party workers were beaten up during the clash as lathi-wielding men were seen chasing them on the busy road in Basanti Bazar area.Sub-inspector Sourav Guha received a head injury and had several stitches, the official said.Trouble began when BJP candidate from Basanti (SC) seat Bikash Sardar was campaigning in the area for the assembly polls to be held in the constituency on April 29, the second and final phase, the official said.Tension flared after BJP workers allegedly objected to the video recording of the campaign by TMC supporters who had assembled by the roadside, and a heated argument soon escalated into a physical confrontation, the official said. Sonia Gandhi responding well to treatment

NEW DELHI, March 26: Senior Congress leader Sonia Gandhi is responding well to treatment for a systemic infection and continues to remain under medical supervision at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, the hospital authorities said on Thursday.Chairman Dr Ajay Swaroop said that Gandhi, who was admitted on the night of March 24, is being treated with antibiotics for systemic infection and is responding well to the therapy.She is under the care of a team of senior doctors, who are closely monitoring her condition, he said.Sources said Gandhi is likely to remain under observation at the hospital for a couple more days as a precautionary measure. Her condition is stable and not serious, they added.The 79-year-old leader was admitted on Tuesday after developing a fever, with sources earlier attributing her illness to a change in the weather. 10 dead, more than 20 injured in bus, pick-up vehicle collision

CHHINDWARA (Madhya Pradesh), March 26: Ten persons were killed and more than 20 injured in a collision between a bus returning from a public function attended by the chief minister and a pick-up vehicle in Madhya Pradesh’s Chhindwara on Thursday evening, a senior police official said.The incident took place near Simaria on Nagpur road, some 25 kilometres from district headquarters, Superintendent of Police Ajay Pandey told PTI.“Six men, three women and a child were killed in the accident,” Pandey said.The bus was carrying more than 40 passengers at the time of the accident, Kotwali station house officer Ashish Kumar added.The injured have been taken to the district hospital and other medical facilities in the vicinity in ambulances and other vehicles, officials said.The SP, collector and other senior officials are at the district hospital, they added.
