SHILLONG, March 26: In a shift in tactics, individuals involved in the illegal transportation of coal are increasingly using smaller vehicles to evade detection by law enforcement agencies.
East Jaintia Hills Police recently intercepted an Alto car carrying nine gunny bags of illegal coal at Damcherra in Kuliang on March 23. Police noted that the use of compact vehicles is a growing trend among offenders attempting to bypass routine checks.
In separate operations on March 25, authorities seized two trucks at the Kongong NGT Check Post and another truck transporting coal unlawfully at Nongrim Hills.
Following intensified vigilance against illegal mining and transportation, police registered seven FIRs and arrested 34 individuals between February 5 and March 25.
