SHILLONG, March 28: East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem on Saturday clarified that the individual seen in a viral video assaulting and threatening a Sumo driver is a civilian and not a police personnel.
The clarification was issued in the wake of the circulation of a video on social media that showed a man hitting the driver and threatening to put him behind bars. Such remarks had led to public speculation that the aggressor was a member of the police force.
“An enquiry confirmed that the person in the video is a civilian. A suo motu case has been registered and legal action will be taken accordingly,” the SP said.
He added that the department remains committed to upholding the rule of law and ensuring citizen safety.
Meanwhile, the FKJGP has condemned the incident as an act of intimidation.
FKJGP chief organising secretary Khrawkupar Nongsiej stated that threatening the public with arrest or firearms is unacceptable, regardless of the individual’s identity.
Nongsiej demanded strict legal action and alleged that the individual has political links through family connections.
He warned that the law must be applied equally to prevent individuals from using such associations to harass citizens, adding that the organisation would monitor the progress of the case.
