On a rainy afternoon, little Nia sat by the window with a sketchbook on her lap and a frown on her face. “I can’t draw,” she muttered, staring at her paper. Her cat was supposed to look fluffy and sweet, but instead it looked like a potato with whiskers.
Her aunt Mira, who loved books, tea, and all things colourful, peeked over her shoulder and smiled. “That’s a very thoughtful potato,” Aunt Mira said.
Nia groaned.“Aunty, I’m serious. I want to make beautiful art, but everything I draw looks wrong.”
Aunt Mira sat beside her. “Then I think,” she said, lowering her voice like she was sharing a secret, “It is time I showed you something.”
Nia’s eyes widened.
Aunt Mira led her upstairs to the attic, where old trunks, lamps, and picture frames rested under soft dust and golden light. In the far corner stood a tall wooden shelf packed with strange, beautiful books.
Some had velvet covers. Some shimmered like moonlight. One looked as though it had been painted by the sky itself.
“These,” said Aunt Mira,“are the Art Books.”
Nia blinked. “What’s special about them?”
Aunt Mira smiled.“Open one.”
Nia reached for a deep blue book with silver swirls on the cover. The moment she opened it, a warm gust of wind whooshed out, smelling of paint, paper, and sunshine.
Before she could even squeak, the attic floor disappeared.WHOOSH!
Nia and Aunt Mira tumbled into a bright world made entirely of art. The trees were watercolor, soft and dripping with green. The clouds were made of fluffy charcoal smudges. Butterflies fluttered past with stained-glass wings, and the road beneath them looked like a giant patchwork collage.
Nia gasped. “We’re inside a painting!”
“Not just a painting,” Aunt Mira said, laughing.
“A whole world of art.”
They walked through a village where every house was built in a different style. One was made of folded paper. Another looked like it had been sculpted from clay. One house leaned sideways as if the artist had changed their mind halfway through.
“Why are some of them crooked?” Nia asked.
A paint-splattered bird landed nearby and chirped, Because art doesn’t have to be perfect to be wonderful! Nia giggled.
As they wandered farther, they entered the Forest of Sketches, where unfinished drawings floated in the air like leaves. Some had missing hands. Some had uneven eyes. One horse had legs that were far too long.
Nia pointed. “Those are mistakes!”
“Are they?” Aunt Mira asked gently.
At that moment, the horse with the long legs galloped proudly past them, faster than all the others. A half-drawn moon lit up the sky in a dreamy silver glow. A tiny portrait with one eyebrow smiled from a frame and said, We’re all becoming.
Nia grew quiet.
Then they came to a great golden hall filled with artists of all kinds, children, grandparents, painters, doodlers, sculptors, and dreamers. Some painted with tiny careful strokes. Others splashed color everywhere. Some drew neat lines, while others scribbled with joy.
On the wall, written in sparkling paint, were the words:
Art is not about being perfect.
Art is about feeling, trying, and seeing.
Nia read the words twice.
Then she looked at her hands.
“Can I make art here too?” she whispered.
Aunt Mira handed her a brush that shimmered like starlight.
“Of course.”
Nia painted slowly at first. Then boldly. Then happily. Her lines were shaky. Her colours spilled. Her cat still looked a little like a potato.
But this time, she laughed. And somehow, it was beautiful.
When they returned to the attic, the blue book closed softly in Nia’s hands. That evening, Nia sat by the window again with her sketchbook.
She drew the cat once more. It still wasn’t perfect. But now she smiled at it anyway.
Because she had learned something magical: Art was not a test to pass. It was a door to walk through.
