Tura, March 28: In a bid to identify and nurture young talent, the West Garo Hills Wrestling Association organised an awareness-cum-training programme at Auxilium Secondary School here on Friday, focusing on grassroots development of the sport.
The initiative, aimed at expanding wrestling’s reach across schools in the district, saw participation from two of the five invited institutions. Despite limited turnout, the session turned into a lively platform for budding athletes to get a first-hand experience of competitive wrestling.
Coaches and players from the association conducted structured training drills and demonstrated key techniques, including takedowns like the double leg, single leg and fireman’s carry, as well as pinning moves such as the armbar, triangle choke and shoulder lock. Advanced throws, including the suplex, slam and hip toss, were also showcased, giving students a glimpse into the technical depth of the sport. The highlight of the programme was the supervised sparring sessions, where students stepped onto the mat to test their skills, guided closely by experienced coaches. The interaction between trainees and association athletes added a competitive edge to the proceedings. Officials of the association underlined the importance of early exposure to structured training, noting that such initiatives could pave the way for discovering future wrestlers from the region. They also emphasised wrestling as a viable sporting career, alongside its role in building strength, discipline and mental resilience. The programme forms part of the association’s broader effort to strengthen the grassroots ecosystem and bring more young athletes into the wrestling fold in West Garo Hills.
