SHILLONG, March 29: Lok Sabha MP from Tura, Saleng A. Sangma, has expressed concern over the growing drug abuse problem among youths in Meghalaya, stating that the number of affected individuals has crossed three lakh.
He described the situation as alarming, stating that drug use is “blooming” at a rapid pace in the state. “Right now even this drugs is blooming, which is nasty,” he said.
Sangma said he has repeatedly raised the issue with the Centre and has also spoken on the matter in Parliament, seeking intervention and support to tackle the crisis.
He informed that he has written to the Centre regarding the need for large-scale intervention, including rehabilitation and support systems for affected youths.
“I have already written so many times… I have already taken part even on the floor of the Parliament,” he said.
The MP added that while there has been some response from the Centre, there is still a lack of clarity regarding the extent of funds provided and their utilisation.
He said there is no clear record available on how much funding has been allocated to address drug abuse or how effectively it is being used.
Sangma also linked the issue to the broader challenge of unemployment and lack of opportunities, stating that without proper intervention, the future of the youths remains at risk.
