SHILLONG, March 30: UDP MLA Paul Lyngdoh on Monday remarked that internal “rumblings” are a natural part of any association as he downplayed reports of friction within his party.
Asked about the current state of the UDP, Lyngdoh, while speaking on the sidelines of an inauguration event here, said such issues exist even in school committees as they are a part of human existence.
It is pertinent to note that the statement comes amid reports of a strained relationship between him and party president Metbah Lyngdoh, following the former’s removal from the State Cabinet last year to accommodate the party chief.
“Electorates will be the best judge and make conscious decision as to who should head and lead the next government,” Lyngdoh added.
Addressing reports that his political rival Mohendro Rapsang and former party colleague Jemino Mawthoh may join the BJP later this year, Lyngdoh noted that such movements are common toward the end of a legislative term.
He cautioned that no party should be taken for granted and stated that Mawthoh’s entry would likely have a positive impact on the BJP’s standing in the state.
According to reports, several former legislators are expected to officially join the BJP in May as the party seeks to strengthen its base ahead of the 2028 Assembly elections.
These include Mohendro Rapsang (who recently resigned from the NPP), Jemino Mawthoh and Pynshngain N. Syiem (formerly with the Congress).
The BJP is reportedly looking to rope in more senior leaders to boost its organisational strength, particularly in the Khasi Hills.

New school block inaugurated

Earlier, Lyngdoh inaugurated a newly constructed nine-classroom school block at the Meghalaya Hindu Mission in Shillong.
The project was spearheaded by Shillong Round Table 252 under its national flagship initiative, ‘Freedom Through Education’, which focuses on strengthening educational infrastructure to empower young learners.
Lyngdoh, in his address, commended the initiative and highlighted the importance of collaborative efforts in advancing education. He remarked that Shillong has a long history of influencing great leaders and thinkers, noting the visits of Subhas Chandra Bose and Rabindranath Tagore to the city.
He further praised the Mawprem locality as a model for secularism and diversity, stating that the area exemplifies peaceful coexistence among people of different faiths and communities.
The event was also attended by Mukunda Jalan, Area 14 Project Convenor, as the guest of honour.
Representatives of Round Table India stated that education is the cornerstone of progress and that such infrastructure projects are vital for community development.
Round Table India is a non-political, non-sectarian organisation of young men dedicated to community service through the development of educational facilities across the country.
